Dry Van trailers, aka “dry van” or “box trailer” are fully enclosed trailer units and are utilized when it is necessary to protect shipments from outside elements, but not necessary to keep them at a specific temperature. Typically, Dry Van freight is palletized, boxed, or loose material. Dry Vans are unable to carry oversized loads. Most Dry Van trailers are 53-foot trailers with dimensions of 53’ x 8’ 6” x 8’ 6” and can be loaded with up to 45,000 pounds of product spread across 26 available pallet positions.
Dry Vans are exceptional in 3 areas: Affordability, Versatility, and Protection. Dry Van trailers are the most commonly available trailer and, as a result, competition in this space is heavy. The high level of competition is great for the end customer as it usually translates into affordable freight. The simplicity of the equipment, being just a box, provides quite a bit of flexibility and allows many different industries to utilize the equipment. Finally, the enclosed nature is great for keeping your products out of potential harsh and damaging elements.
Refrigerated freight is very similar to Van freight, but with a twist: loads are able to be climate-controlled. Refrigerated trailers have a built-in refrigeration system, keeping products at the desired temperature throughout transportation. Typically, refrigerated freight is limited to customers needing to move meat, dairy, produce, food, plants, beverages, pharmaceuticals, personal care products, and other products requiring temperature control. Though very similar in shape to Van Trailers, Refrigerated trailers would not be considered interchangeable due to the special construction and fragile insulated walls.
A standard flatbed trailer is commonly used because it is versatile. It is ideally used when there is no accessible dock. Sometimes products can require side or crane loading which makes the flatbed trailer great..
